Drs Ellen Pikitch, Elizabeth Babcock and Phaedra Doukakis from the Pew Institute for Ocean Science will be attending the joint meeting of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and International Congress of Ecology (INTECOL) in Montreal in August 2005.

In addition to attending the general meeting, these PIOS scientist will participate in an special invitation only workshop on Caspian Sea entitled "Sturgeon in the Caspian Sea: scaling up from individuals to population estimates and conservation status". Specifically, Drs Pikitch, Babcock and Doukakis will be using mathematical models to gauge the health of Caspian Sea sturgeon utilizing data provided by representatives of each Caspian Sea nation who will be attending the workshop.

Dr. Pikitch and a colleague from Kazakhstan will present a talk entitled "Status of Caspian sturgeon: Survey catches, population estimates, fisheries management and CITES" in the symposium "Linking ecological processes and environmental impacts across scales: Coastal ecology and energy development in the Caspian Sea".
