"Billfish: A Challenge for Survival," a television documentary premiering nationally on PBS stations around Earth Day in late April, is the topic of this special Town Meeting.
This event is free and open to the public.
Location: Main Auditorium at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne.
Following an advance screening of the one-hour documentary, a panel of experts will discuss the ocean conservation issues surrounding the
magnificent billfish—marlins, sailfish, and spearfish—prized gamefish that attract anglers from around the world but also are frequent, unintended victims of the commercial fishing industry.
Featured participants include:
Dr. Ellen Pikitch, Executive Director of the Pew Institute for Ocean Science and Professor at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and atmospheric Science;
Dr. Guy Harvey, a noted marine artist and biologist;
Dr. Ellen Peel, President of the Billfish Foundation; and
Dr. Russell Nelson, a fisheries scientist with the Billfish Foundation.
Produced by Broadcast Quality, Inc., a Coral Gables-based production company, presented by WPBT-Miami (PBS), and distributed to Public
Television Stations by American Public Television, the documentary investigates the various groups that benefit and exploit the worldwide billfish resource and helps to highlight the current predicament it faces.
The Town Meeting brings participants in the documentary and the vital issues it examines to a lively discussion with members of the audience.
A pre-event reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. The screening, followed by the panel discussion, begins promptly at 6:30pm.
