Sharks to Get EU Protection as Stocks Ebb, Imperiling Ecosystem

The depletion of sharks threatens to upset the ocean's balance and the European Union plans to draw up measures within two years to protect the animal with the most powerful jaws on the planet, EU fisheries chief Joe Borg said.

The University of Miami's Pew Institute for Ocean Science estimates that as many as 70 million sharks are killed annually for their fins, considered a food delicacy in many Asian countries.

…``There have been serious declines in many sharks and they simply can't withstand any more management delays. Sharks have suffered from low priority and they need this type of leadership from the top.''
