Dr. Ellen Pikitch Interviewed About Ecotourism on MSNBC.com
November 17, 2008 - MSNBC.com

Dr. Ellen Pikitch was featured in a special segment on MSNBC.com regarding the environmental responsibilities of ecotourism operations. The segment accompanied a popular feature on the "Today" show, "Ends of the Earth," in which “Today” anchors travel to locations around the world to explore the extraordinary diversity of life on this planet.

Dr. Pikitch, Executive Director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science, urged ecotourism operations to consider whether their way of business meets a responsible standard. Some points they should consider: are they using enormous amounts of fuel to take people to a very remote spot; and, are they giving back to the environment and the local community?

"What's at stake here are some of the most important, pristine, wild places in the world," Pikitch said. "The problem with the loss of some of these places is the damage can be irreversible."
