Biologists Push to Save Sturgeon
April 20, 2009 - BioBulletin: American Museum of Natural History
Sturgeon in the Caspian Sea are being fished nearly to extinction for the luxury of their eggs: caviar. This Bio Bulletin, produced by the American Museum of Natural History, features efforts to protect the fish by conservation biologists like Dr. Phaedra Doukakis with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University. At the Manhattan-based Museum, Dr. Doukakis and her colleagues are DNA-testing caviar from U.S. gourmet stores to catch illegal importers of the most prized caviar, beluga.
