Dr. Ellen Pikitch, Executive Director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University, is among the select university faculty chosen to give an Inauguration Week lecture as part of a formal welcome to the university's fifth President, Samuel L. Stanley, Jr.
On Oct. 21 in the Wang Center, after a warm introduction by Dr. Stanley, Dr. Pikitch spoke passionately to the 50-person audience about the declining status of the oceans and in particular, two ancient and charismatic ocean species: sturgeons and sharks. In a lecture entitled "Stemming the Tide of Ocean Extinctions," Dr. Pikitch discussed how overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution and global climate change are together causing a spiraling decline of marine ecosystems and the irreversible loss of species. Dr. Pikitch, who is also a Professor in SBU's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, explained how the Institute's unique efforts around the world to advance ocean conservation through science have influenced the adoption of more protective policies to better safeguard these species, but that much more work is needed.
