Dr. Elizabeth Suter, Research Affiliate

Liz Suter, Ph.D., is a researcher at IOCS and an Assistant Professor at Molloy University. She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Marine and Atmospheric Science from Stony Brook University and a B.A. in Environmental Studies from the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College.

 

Dr Suter specializes in the application of sequencing techniques and assessing biodiversity using environmental DNA (eDNA). She is a leading scientist in IOCS's eDNA work including the use of new autonomous technologies.

For her dissertation, she worked in Venezuela with the Cariaco Ocean Time Series program, applying novel approaches to describe microbial ecology and ocean geochemistry. She is currently focused on place-based science in the NYC-Long Island region and applying eDNA techniques for assessing ecosystem resilience in the South Shore Estuary. She has also worked on projects in Long Island Sound and the Hudson River Estuary and is currently responsible for technical aspects of the eDNA part of the ShiRP project.

Dr. Suter is co-author of over a dozen peer-reviewed publications as well as open access educational modules in topics such as bioinformatics. She has been awarded grants from the National Science Foundation, Water Resources Institute, and others. Dr. Suter teaches and has developed many courses in Earth and Environmental Sciences. She is a strong advocate for young people in science and diversifying STEM through support and mentorship programs.
